The Minnesota Washington County Commissioners voted to end funding for 4-H at the County level this year ($131,800).  County funding will discontinue on September 15, 2009.

Lack of continued funding for the 4-H Extension Educators will mean that no State Fair trips can be awarded from the County Fair (the goal of every member).  This will effectively end 4-H in Washington County as we know it today.

The effects of this decision will cascade by dramatically decreasing the County Fair participation, exhibits and activities.  This will in-turn lower overall County Fair attendance which will impact businesses and the community at large with lost revenues.  The loss of 4-H funding essentially will mean the loss of the County Fair.

Dear Washington County 4-H Supporter,

4-H has been working in Washington County to help its youth realize their potential for over 100 years.  On March 24, 2009, Washington County voted to eliminate county funding for Washington County 4-H effective September 15, 2009.  In response to this decision, Washington County 4-H families and volunteers are rallying together to save our program. Take a look at the “Save Washington County 4-H” website at www.save4-H.com, and you will find more than a thousand

4-Hers, 4-H alumni, volunteers, and leaders supporting the Washington County 4-H Program.

Studies have proven the positive impact of 4-H on youth—academically, socially, and emotionally.  Research conducted at Tufts University found that “4-H has a greater positive impact on youth than any other youth-serving organization.” Youth that participate in even one year of 4-H, are more likely than their peers to go to college.  And youth participating

in 4-H are also less likely to smoke, consume alcohol or ride with a driver who was drinking.

4-H participants also report having more involvement in their school and community.  Information collected from Washington County 4-H families and volunteers demonstrated that for every $1 invested in 4-H; over $10 was put back into Washington County communities in the form of community service, volunteer hours and support for local businesses.

Now is the time to support Washington County 4-H.  Over $110,000 needs to be raised to continue the 4-H program.
